Mission Statement

Citizens for Sustainable Development (CSD) main focus is to oppose the proposed Intense Livestock Operation (ILO) by Namaka Farms to the Rural Municipality (RM) Rudy, to be located 3.5 miles from the South Saskatchewan River and 500 meters from the M1 canal supplying many communities with their drinking water. This ILO (feedlot) will house 36,000 head of cattle which will be Saskatchewan’s largest feedlot. No environmental assessment is required for this venture! This will be the first of many more feedlots to follow!

The concept of Saskatchewan developing its own feedlot alley was conceived in a 2002 report by the Centre for Study of Agriculture Law and the Environment at the University of Saskatchewan prepared a study for Saskatchewan Agriculture. This report then became the manual to attract ILOs to relocate to the Outlook and Riverhurst areas from Alberta. The report is titled “Feedlot Development In Saskatchewan: A Case Study of the Outlook and Riverhurst Irrigation Districts”. It should be noted that 2 of the 4 authors of this report are associated with the feedlot industry. Despite issues being raised throughout the report identifying water, road maintenance, increased taxes, and lack of infrastructure as major challenges, the report summarized the Outlook area respondents to say, “In general, there was a desire amongst irrigation farmers to have a feedlot developed in the area”. The report was based on surveys of ten farmers in Riverhurst and “ten or so” in the Outlook area. Subsequently four of six councillors in the RM of Rudy [1][2] have approved the Namaka proposal.

Despite the political agenda that has been implemented as the result of this report a request for details of the surveys in question under Freedom of Information request has now confirmed the report cannot be substantiated. (letter from University of Saskatchewan)

Saskatchewan Highways has collaborated with SK Agriculture to sweeten the pot and encourage Namaka's proposal to be approved offering to improve highways in the area if the RM approves this ILO.

Concerned citizens have now launched a legal appeal. All residents of Saskatchewan need to be informed and aware of the implications this project has for the future of Saskatchewan, the impact on their drinking water and on the South Saskatchewan River, the most threatened river in Canada.

The site is 19 miles south on a substandard gravel base road called The Clearing The Path Primary (CTP), or 4 miles west on a gravel road from  Highway #219 with secondary road restrictions, until that Highway is built to Primary by the Saskatchewan Dept. of Highways.  The RM of Rudy is presently looking at outsourcing their gravel needs as they are finding a shortage of good quality gravel available in the RM, as per April 2010 Ratepayers meeting and Dec. 15, 2010 Regular RM Council meeting.

 

 

Here is an article from the Western Producer that tells about the serious problems feedlots had in 2010 due to the high rainfall levels. Since climate change is making weather patterns more and more unpredictable, last year's problems should be seen as something that could easily happen again, if not regularly.
